Purpose: This study was done to develop a social support program for caregivers of elders with dementia and to examine the effects of this program on reducing burden and increasing well-being in caregivers.
Methods: Participants included 37 caregivers for elders with dementia (intervention group: 18, control group: 19). The independent variable was the social support program and dependent variables were caregiver burden and well-being. Well-being was evaluated as a scoring of quality of life, life satisfaction and health status. The intervention group participated in the social support program for 10 weeks. This program included emotional, informational and material support, and respite care.
Results: Burden and health problems in the intervention group were significantly decreased compared to the control group. Quality of life and life satisfaction in the intervention group were significantly increased.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that the social support program was an effective intervention in reducing caregiver burden and improving well-being. The program developed for this study may be useful to nurses when helping caregivers of patients with various chronic illnesses and should be added to comprehensive nursing service.
